Lucas County Parks & Nature Preserves

The following list of parks and preserves includes those managed by federal, state, county, and non-governmental agencies (such as the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, various historical societies, etc.).

We have tried to collect information on the activities and facilities available at various parks, but things may change without us knowing about it. So please double-check the information at the official site (click on the park’s name to go there).




Audobon Islands (State Nature Preserve)

Irwin Prairie (State Nature Preserve)

  • Location: Located in Lucas County about 10 miles west of Toledo. From I–475/U.S. Route 23, follow U.S. Route 20 west approximately 3 miles to Centennial Road; south about 1 mile to Bancroft Street; and then west on Bancroft street to the preserve entrance.
  • Park size: 226 acres
  • Total trail length: 1.25 mile loop
  • Dogs not permitted
  • At least some parts are handicap accessible
  • The preserve contains the finest remaining sedge meadow in the state. The best time to visit is in July and August when summer wildflowers are in bloom. State–listed (rare) plants include: red baneberry, Sartwell’s sedge, fringed gentian, Kalm’s St. John’s–wort, Riddell’s goldenrod and grass–leaf arrowhead. Rare birds include sedge wrens, Bell’s vireo, least bittern, and golden–winged warbler. Other rare animals include spotted turtles, blandings turtles and the purplish copper butterfly.

Kitty Todd (State Nature Preserve)

  • Location: Located in western Lucas County north of Old State Line Road

  • Park size: 500 acres
  • The preserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy. Double–check the official site, but when we last looked the preserve was open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays; the preserve is only open one weekend a month from May through October (the 1st weekend). Habitats are those typical of the Oak Openings region, including sand barren, black oak savanna, sedge meadow and wet prairie. More than 100 rare plants can be found here, including prickly–pear cactus, yellow–fringed orchid, cross–leaved milkwort, grass–pink orchid and Skinner’s foxglove. Other rare creatures include the Karner blue butterfly and the lark sparrow.

Magee Marsh (State Wildlife Area)

Mallard Club (State Wildlife Area)
