Erie County Parks & Nature Preserves

The following list of parks and preserves includes those managed by federal, state, county, and non-governmental agencies (such as the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, various historical societies, etc.).

We have tried to collect information on the activities and facilities available at various parks, but things may change without us knowing about it. So please double-check the information at the official site (click on the park’s name to go there).


Birmingham School Metropark (Metro Park)

Castalia Fish Hatchery (State Fish Hatchery)
  • Location: Take SR 269 south off of SR 6 and then go 2 miles. Turn left on Heywood Rd.; after one mile, turn right on Homegardner Rd. and the hatchery is 200 feet on the right.
  • Park size: 90 acres

  • Lottery based fishing program. Hatchery open to public M–F 8 AM – 3 PM
Castalia Quary MetroPark (Metro Park)

Dupont Marsh (State Nature Preserve)

  • Location: Located on the east side of the Huron River, 3 miles upstream from Lake Erie on County Rd 126 (River Road).

Eagle Point (Metro Park)

  • Activities that can be enjoyed here include hiking, kayaking, canoeing, camping, and birdwatching (it is a designated stop on the Lake Erie Birding Trail). There is an observation deck to view birds and other wildlife. A non-profit group of train enthusiasts have laid out 7-5-inch gauge track and schedule about ten public runs per year.

Erie Sand Barrens (State Nature Preserve)

  • Location: From the junction of State Rte 4 and US Rte 2, follow State Rte 4 five miles south to Mason Rd; proceed 2–1/2 miles east on Mason Rd to Taylor Rd; then 1–1/2 miles to Scheid Rd.

Glacial Grooves (Ohio Historical Society)

  • Location: Glacial Grooves is located on Kelleys Island, Erie County, in Lake Erie 8 miles north of Sandusky. Ferries depart from Marblehead and Sandusky.

Hoffman Forest MetroPark (Metro Park)

Huron River (Metro Park)

  • One of the few remaining river marshes in Ohio. The Huron River Path follows the river and can be explored on foot or by bike (gravel trail). A gazebo near the Kara Deering Bridge offers an excellent view of the marsh. The MetroPark also is an access point for the DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve.

Inscription Rock (Ohio Historical Society)
  • Location: Inscription Rock is located on Kelleys Island, in Erie County, in Lake Erie, eight miles north of Sandusky. Ferries depart from Marblehead.

Milan Towpath (Metro Park)

  • This narrow park follows the path of an early canal and railway, and the trail follows the old towpath for the canal. The pak includes an area that was once included a Moravian Indian mission village.
