Athens County Parks & Nature Preserves

The following list of parks and preserves includes those managed by federal, state, county, and non-governmental agencies (such as the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, various historical societies, etc.).

We have tried to collect information on the activities and facilities available at various parks, but things may change without us knowing about it. So please double-check the information at the official site (click on the park’s name to go there).



B&O Rail Trail (Multi-use trail)
  • Location: See above link for driving directions and maps.
  • Total trail length: 13 miles when completed

  • Will like Hockhocking Adena Bikeway bike trail and Moonville rail trail
Baker Easement (Athens Conservancy (NGO))
  • Location: Access to this property is primarily via a trailhead off Ohio State Route 690. To reach this trailhead from Athens, take US-50 east from US-33 5.1 miles to OH-690. Turn left on OH-690 and go 0.5 mile to the gravel parking area on the left. The trails are blazed with red and blue paint.
  • Park size: 284 acres

Blair Preserve (Athens Conservancy (NGO))

  • Park size: 75 acres

Bluebell Preserve (Athens Conservancy (NGO))

Burr Oak (State Park)
  • 10220 Burr Oak Lodge Road, Glouster, Ohio 45732

Desonier (State Nature Preserve)
  • 3385 Deep Hollow Rd., Coolville, Ohio 45723
  • GPS coordinates: N39.236867, W81.868167
  • Location:
    • From Athens: East on US Rte 50, turn left on Township Rd 117C, go 0.8 miles, turn left on County Rd 56, go 0.2 miles to where County Rd 65 turns left, proceed 0.7 miles to the parking area on the left.
    • From Coolville: West on US Rte 50, turn right on County Rd 56 (Brimstone Rd), go 0.5 miles to where County Rd 65 turns left. Parking lot is 0.7 miles on left.
  • Park size: 502 acres
  • Total trail length: 2.5 miles
  • Good site for bird watching
  • Contains a large pond created by beavers.

Fox Lake Wildlife Area (State Wildlife Area)

Gifford SF (State Forest)
  • GPS coordinates: N39.441893, W81.908142
  • Location: From US-33 take exit 13 and turns left onto OH-550 E/Columbs Rd. toward Amesville. Follow OH-550 for around 14.5 miles. Continue straight onto OH-377 N for about a half mile. The state forest will be on your left.

Poston Plant Lands Public Hunting Area (State Wildlife Area)

Riddle (State Nature Preserve)
  • Sells Park – Avon Place, Athens, OH 45640

  • Location: Located in Athens County, the preserve is next to Strouds Run State Park. For more information, please contact the city of Athens at 740–592–3325.

Sells City Park (Athens Municipal Park)
  • GPS coordinates: N39.346578,W82.074924
  • Location:
    • From 33 East: Take a left off the East State Street exit, then left onto Avon Place. Avon dead ends into Sells Park.
    • From 33 West: Take a right off the East State Street exit, then left onto Avon Place. Avon dead ends into Sells Park.
    • From SR 50/Parkersburg: Take the East State St. exit, keep going straight and take a right onto Avon Place. Avon dead ends into Sells Park.

  • There are nearly 21 miles of trail in total (8 trails, 3 connector trail); this includes trails within the city park, trails that appear to be on Ohio University property, and trail that are on the western portion of Strouds Run State Park. It is possible to join up with the trails that also connect to those on the eastern side of Strouds Run State Park. In addition there is a 19 mile paved bike path

      Looks like the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) servers are down at the moment. Also, the AthensTrails.org has changed their web site. Can’t do anything about ODNR (we are not affiliated with them). But I will update our links to AthensTrails.org. I’d like to thank you for pointing out the problems. Keeping up with changes to federal, state, county, and NGO sites is an on-going job. We appreciate it when our readers point out link problems, so we can fix them more rapidly.

      Update: ODNR is back (perhaps they were doing maintenance?). Updated the NGO links to directly link to Athens Conservancy. Again, thanks.
