Hamilton County Parks & Nature Preserves

The following list of parks and preserves includes those managed by federal, state, county, and non-governmental agencies (such as the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, various historical societies, etc.).

We have tried to collect information on the activities and facilities available at various parks, but things may change without us knowing about it. So please double-check the information at the official site (click on the park’s name to go there).



Alms Park (Metro Park)

Annwood Park (Metro Park)

  • A very small wooded park, basically just for sitting on park benches and enjoying the setting.

Ault Park (Metro Park)

  • Park size: 224 acres
  • One of the best parks in Cincinnati to observe the geology of the area. The park includes nature trails.

Avoca Park (County Conservation Area)
  • 8063 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45227
  • Location: From I-275: Exit at State Route 28 (exit #57 Milford). Go east toward city of Milford and cross the bridge. Route 28 ends here. Pick up U.S. Route 50 east for approximately 3.3 miles. Entrance to Avoca is on the left.

Bettman Nature Preserve (Metro Park)

  • Wooded park featuring a nature education center, plus library and archives for the park system.

Buttercup Valley (Metro Park)

  • Steep, wooded trails that will make you forget that you are in the city. The woods have been untouched since pioneer days, so some trees are over 200 years old.The official site says that it is a "hiker's dream nestled in the heart of urban neighborhoods".

Caldwell Nature Preserve (Metro Park)

California Woods Nature Preserve (Metro Park)

  • Park size: 113 acres
  • Contains miles of nature trails; next door to the Magrish Preserve, which is an important birding area. There is a nature center at the site.

Campbell Lake Preserve (County Preserve)
  • 10431 Campbell Road, Harrison, OH 45030
  • Location: Take I-74 to Dry Fork exit, turn left, cross over highway, turn right onto Harrison Ave. Turn left on Kilby Road, right on Campbell Road to park entrance on left.
  • Park size: 183 acres
  • Dog friendly (Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length and owners must pick up after them.)
  • Verify with the official site, but when last checked an Ohio license was not required to fish the four lakes here; Bass and northern pike are catch and release only; bluegill and crappie are limited to 10 each, per day.
Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden (Zoo / Botanical Garden)

Daniel Drake Park (Metro Park)

  • Shelter constructed on beautiful overlook; park also has a walking path.

Embshoff Woods (County Park)
  • 4050 Paul Road Cincinnati, OH 45238
  • Location: I-75 South, exit at Freeman Avenue. From Freeman, exit at 50 east (also called River Road). From 50, turn right on Fairbanks. From Fairbanks, bear left onto Delhi Pike. From Delhi, turn onto Mt. Alverno. From Mt. Alverno, turn left onto Paul Road. Paul Road dead ends at Embshoff.

Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve (County Preserve)

  • Location: Located 1 mile south of the Northgate Shopping Center at the corner of Colerain Avenue and Poole Road. From Colerain, turn onto Poole Road. Entrance is on the left side of Poole Road. From Ronald Reagan Highway: Exit at Colerain Avenue, north on Colerain. Turn left onto Poole Road. Entrance is on the left side of Poole Road.

Fernbank Park (County Park)
  • 50 Thornton Avenue Cincinnati, OH 45233
  • Location: From downtown Cincinnati take US 50 West to community of Sayler Park; Fernbank Park is located on the left along the Ohio River or Ronald Regan Highway becomes I-275 South. Follow I-275 South to Exit 7 Ohio 128 toward Cleves/Hamilton. Turn left onto OH-128. Turn slight left onto US-50 East. Follow US-50 East (Three Rivers Parkway) to 50 Thornton Avenue.

Francis RecreAcres (County Park)

  • Location: From I-275, exit at State Route 42 (Sharonville/Maxon exit). South on State Route 42 approximately 1 mile. Turn left onto Kemper Road (United Dairy Farmers at corner). Stay on Kemper for approximately 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Conrey Road. Park entrance is on the right approximately 1/4 of a mile.
French Park (Metro Park)

  • The miles of hiking trail include both meadows and wooded hills. The park offers a distant view of Cincinnati skyline.

Glenwood Gardens (County Park)

  • Location: Located on Route 4 at the intersection of Glendale-Milford Road in Woodlawn.

Krohn Conservatory (Botanical Garden)

LaBoiteaux Woods (Metro Park)

Lake Isabella (County Park)

  • Location: I-275 to Loveland-Indian Hill exit; park entrance is off Loveland-Madeira Road, 1,000 feet south of I-275.
  • Park size: 77 acres
  • Features a 28-acre pay lake that is stocked weekly (March-October) and offers fishing from the bank, dock and rental boat.
Little Miami (State Park & Bike Path)
  • Dog friendly
  • Fishing is permitted from boats and from shore at the canoe access sites. A valid Ohio fishing license is required.

Miami Whitewater Forest (County Park)
  • 9001 Mt. Hope Road Harrison, OH 45030
  • Location: I-74 to Dry Fork Road exit, turn right on Dry Fork Road, turn right on West Road to park entrance. Also accessible from Route 128 to Mt. Hope Road.

  • Dog friendly (In 2014 an 11-acre dog park will open, called “Simmonds Family Dog Park”)

Mitchell Memorial Forest (County Park)

  • Location: I-74 to Cleves exit, right on Route 128 to Miamitown, right on Harrison Avenue, right on East River Road, left on Gum Run Road, right on Buffalo Ridge Road, left on Zion Road to park entrance on right. Also accessible from Springdale Road, right on Harrison Avenue, left on Wesselman Road, right on Buffalo Ridge Road, left on Zion Road to park entrance on right.

Oak Glen Nature Preserve (County Conservation Area)

  • Location: I-275 to Blue Rock road. Go north on Blue Rock for approximately 1.5 miles to Flick Road. Turn left on Flick for approximately .5 mile to Thompson Road. Turn right on Thompson, Oak Glen Nature Preserve is on the right approximately 2 miles from Flick Road

Otto Armleder Memorial Park (County Park)

  • Location: I-71 N or S; take Red Bank Road (exit 9) onto Red Bank Expressway toward Fairfax. Continue onto Red Bank Road, right onto Wooster Pike. Armleder Park is approximately 1.4 miles on the left.

Richardson Forest Preserve (County Conservation Area)

  • Location: Take 27 (at Colerain Avenue exit) north from I-275 to Kemper Road (past Rumpke landfill). Turn right at the Kemper Road exit and then right onto Kemper Road. Turn left onto Lick Road (the first road to the left). Continue on Lick Road until it dead ends at a locked gate.

Sharon Woods (County Park)

Sharon Woods Gorge (State Nature Preserve)

  • Location: Located southwest of the dam in Sharon Woods Park. Take Exit 46 off I–275 and proceed south on U.S. Route 42; proceed east on Kemper Road 1/2 mile to the park entrance.  
  • Park size: 21 acres
  • Limestone gorge with fossil bearing cliffs. Owned and managed by Hamilton County, which has a larger county park (also known as Sharon Woods) that envelops this nature preserve.
Shawnee Lookout (County Park)
  • 2008 Lawrenceberg Road North Bend, OH 45052
  • Location: I-275 to Kilby Road exit, right on Kilby Road, right onto U.S. Route 50, left onto Lawrenceburg Road to park entrance on left approximately 1.5 miles.

  • Park includes Native American Earthworks, a historic school house, and a log cabin. Along the Little Miami River seasonally flooded riverbanks provide a habitat for migrating waterfowl. An additional 914 acres of wetland are adjacent to the park. A variety of wildlife make a home in the park and adjoining wetland.
Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum (Cemetery & Botanical Garden)

  • Canoeing, camping, disc golf, golf; this park also features the Winton Woods Riding Center where people can learn horseback riding.
Withrow Nature Preserve (County Preserve)

  • Location: I-275, south on Five Mile Road, left at stop sign to Old Five Mile Road to park entrance on left.

Woodland Mound (County Park)

  • Location: I-275, west on Route 125 (Beechmont Avenue), left on Nordyke Road to park entrance on right. Also accessible via U.S. Route 52, left on Eight Mile Road, right on Old Kellogg to park entrance on left.
