  1. Thanks for all your comments! If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of camera(s) do you use? We use Canon S100s, but are thinking about going to a digital SLR. Thanks!

    1. I just got a new point-and-shoot camera: a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 (which is replacing my old Lumix DMC-ZS6). My husband uses another point-and-shoot: a Kodak Z990.

Here’s what I like about my current Lumix: it takes great macros, has good white balance, has an HDR mode (snaps 3 photos at different exposures, then blends them), and it has 20x optical zoom. In easy mode I can enable something that Panasonic calls “Intelligent Resolution technology” to zoom up to 40x without appreciable degradation in the image (great for taking butterfly photos :-)).

I am in my mid-fifties, so I’m old enough to have started out with a film-based SLR. I really liked my SLR, so I assumed that I would like a DSLR. At some point I inherited an older model DSLR, and it turned out I didn’t like it that much. When I would take off the lens, it turns out that the magnetized sensor would draw in dust particles. I think that newer models have addressed this to some degree, so I don’t know if this would be an issue with newer models. Another thing I really like about point-and-shoot cameras is that nowadays you can get them with fairly powerful optical zoom. To get the equivalent with a DSLR I’d have to carry a really heavy lens. Since I take most of my photographs while hiking, the weight is an issue. I also do a lot of one-handed photography because the other hand is holding a walking stick. I think it’s easier to do that with a point-and-shoot camera.

One of the things that I really miss from my film-based SLR days is having a manual focus ring. I looked up your point-and-shoot at Amazon, and it looks like you have a ring to which you can assign a function (like manual focus). That sounds really great. Another thing I miss about my SLR is being able to have much greater control of aperture and shutter speed to create beautiful bokeh in the background. And I wish I could use a neutral density filter. Oh well.

I have also learned to do post-processing with a photo editor, and I typically fiddle with photos before I upload them. (I use GIMP which is free, but it has kind of a steep learning curve).

  2. This video had me laughing all day. Also, I really enjoy your blog and the wonderful photos. I have just started a blog–I’m enjoying it a lot and am hoping to improve my photography skills!

    1. Thanks, Deb! I just checked out your blog, and I enjoyed it. It looks like we have a lot of common interests, both live in central Ohio, and both of us were named, “Deb”. It really is a small world. 🙂
