Punderson Manor Lodge & Conference Center

In May we stayed at Punderson Manor - an English Tudor style lodge located Punderson State Park. The lodge was comfortable and convenient to a variety of natural venues. Oh yes, and it is reputed to be haunted by a dozen ghosts. Haunted Punderson For those living outside Ohio, the following chart is a simple decision tree for determining if a given locale is haunted. Punderson Manor is located next to Punderson Lake - a natural glacial kettle lake that is unusually deep. Read more ➜

Walnut Woods Metro Park

Walnut Woods is the newest Columbus area Metro Park. This 1,032 acre park is located southeast of Columbus near Groveport. We visited the Metro Park in March and again at the end of summer. The park is divided into three sections. The middle section is currently unimproved, with no trails. It has several lakes and ponds and a segment of Big Run Creek. It will eventually have a trail and areas for bird watching. The other two sections - the Tall Pines Area and the Buckeye Area have Read more ➜

The Wilds

The Wilds is both a wildlife conservation center and a tourist attraction. From a tourist's perspective, visiting The Wilds is like visiting a really, really big zoo. It sits on nearly 10,000 acres of land in rural, southeastern Ohio. Although the carnivorous animals at The Wilds live in fenced areas, most of the big, herd animals live in enclosures that are so large they don't feel like enclosures at all. Instead of walking from one wildlife habitat to the next as you would at a traditional zoo, Read more ➜

Kiser Lake Wetlands State Nature Preserve

Kiser Lake Wetlands is a 51 acre state nature preserve in Champaign County. It is located in a corner of Kiser Lake State Park. We visited this preserve in mid-May. Kiser Lake State Park

We visited Kiser Lake State Park in Champaign County at the end of May. The park features a 396 acre lake man-made lake. Originally a moraine valley created during the ice age, the lake was formed when a dam was built on Mosquito Creek at one end of the valley. The lake is 2.5 miles long with 5.3 miles of shoreline and five piers. Additionally, boats (motors prohibited) are available for rent at the park. Many people were fishing the weekend that we were there. Read more ➜

Zaleski State Forest: King’s Hollow Tunnel

Mineral, Moonville, Hope — all were towns active in Ohio's mining and iron manufacturing industries during the 19th century. They were connected by the Moonville rail line which passed through two long tunnels on the way to the iron furnace at Hope. The towns are long gone, as is the rail line, but the two tunnels remain and can be found in the Zaleski State Forest. The more famous of the two is the Moonville Tunnel which is the subject of numerous ghostly tales. We visited the Moonville Read more ➜

Holden Arboretum

When I entered information for Holden Arboretum into our on-line guide, I was impressed by the size of this Lake County arboretum - 3,600 acres (14.6 km²) with 19 miles (30.6 km) of trails. I added it to my must-see list. Would it live up to its statistics? In mid-May, we visited Holden Arboretum. I'll spare you the suspense, my only regret about my visit, is that I didn't have a lot more time to explore this wonderful place. We parked by the visitors center. The visitors Read more ➜

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

Burton Wetlands is a 305 acre preserve in Geauga County whose terrain was shaped by glaciers during the most recent Ice Age. Most notably there are two glacial kettles in the preserve. A glacial kettle forms when a glacier calves over a land surface (that's when a huge chunk breaks off). As the glacier recedes and the calved ice melts, a lake takes its place. The plants living in and around the glacial kettles of Ohio would normally be found farther north in Canada. They are living remnants of Ohio's Read more ➜

The park features 3.74 miles of well-laid out trails, with bridges, wide wooden stairs, observation decks, boardwalks, and strategically placed benches in some of the most scenic locales. Ohio Caverns

We'd been looking forward to a Saturday hike, but the weather forecast called for rain. What to do? Go hiking underground! We visited Ohio Caverns, a commercial cavern open year round offering guided underground tours. Just the thing for a rainy day. Ohio Caverns is located in Logan County in the Bellefontaine Outlier. This hilly region of Ohio contains the highest point in Ohio. Just down the road from the cavern is Campbell Hill with an elevation of 1,549 feet above sea level. The Read more ➜
